A thumb is only as accurate as one person's thumb is similar to another. And the dimensions of my thumb might very well be that of your pinky. But the dimensions of my reasonableness should not differ from yours as my thumbs might. Rather they should conform to an outward blueprint. I think “rules of thumb” might be too weak as well.
