Excellent introduction. In very broad terms, I find grace whenever we remember the atonement of His death - with or without the elements. I do find that since I am (and will always have a physical body), that the closer we come to sharing the relationship of a meal in Him, the deeper the grace - so the elements are always welcomed.

Aaron, its December 22 and you are speaking of His death on a cross! Have you forgotten all about Christmas?? Or perhaps you are not satisfied with Christmas without the immediate context of His sacrifice?

Bud Harlow here, friends of your parents at WB,
Doug forwarded you web site, and I am exceedingly grateful,
Delightful food for the soul, and most thought provoking--

Would recommend a book that I just finished--Bonhoeffer (sp?),
recent publication, I think the author is Mataxis (again sp?),
Keep up the good work, I have found a meaningful spot on the web, midst the vast array of nonsense,

I agree wholeheartedly with what he says. It is ironic that often it seems easier to read books about Jesus and our faith walk than to meet directly with Him and have that time anointed by the power of the holy spirit.

I have heard and read many stories that remind me of The story. There are also many that conclude out of sync with the gospel... they are the sad tragic ones.

Interesting find! Phrases like that often go farther back than I would at first suspect. I'm not familiar with this one, though. What other works or kind of contexts have you seen it used in?

As you say, one word that broadly describes the difference between being in as opposed to outside God's kingdom is change. If that were not a major defining characteristic Christianity would be on all accounts unattractive!

Great post! Have you ever read Lewis' "Transposition"? It is a short essay published in the same edition as "The Weight of Glory" that is currently available, and I think that you would find it to be most interesting in relation to this topic.

Thanks for posting!

It's amazing how easily I forget just how much I love Chesterton. Thanks for reminding me! I have some thoughs along these lines I'd like to share once we do the blog roll-up. Simply put, Christian theology is a balancing act because the source of all our theology, or knowledge of God, is itself a paradox: God and man united in one divine person, Jesus Christ. We wouldn't know one lick about God if Jesus had not revealed himself in human flesh.

I think "rules of thumb" might be too weak as well. A thumb is only as accurate as one person's thumb is similar to another. And the dimensions of my thumb might very well be that of your pinky.

But the dimensions of my reasonableness should not differ from yours as my thumbs might. Rather they should conform to an outward blueprint.
